Zunar’s first cartoon was published when he was 12 years old, in 1974. He has never received a formal education in arts, because he took the science stream. When he failed in UTM, he became a professional cartoonist by joining Gila-Gila, a very popular local cartoon magazine. Now he is an independent cartoonist. With the "How Can I be Neutral, Even My Pen Has a Stand", Zunar exposes corruption through his drawings. He has published 19 books – all banned by the BN's government, under which, he was also nabbed 7 times and was charged with 9 counts under the Sedition Act and slapped with a travel ban. Outside Malaysia, Zunar has received numerous awards, including the "Courage in Editorial Cartooning Award" and the "Cartooning For Peace", which was presented by Kofi Annan. He has also been invited to exhibit his works and give talks at several universities including Oxford and Harvard. Zunar was also invited to give a speech at the United Nations in Geneva, and at several cartoonist conventions in Washington, Paris, Bilbao, London, Amsterdam and Berlin. |
