Dr. Khairuddin Ab. Hamid was the Founding Dean of Faculty of Engineering at UNIMAS in 1993 and became the Deputy Vice Chancellor from 2001 to 2008, and the Vice Chancellor from 2008 until 2013.

During his tenure as the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Dr Khairuddin laid a strong foundation in terms of employing competent teaching staff and making available all the necessary academic infrastructural requisites for an accredited engineering degree programmes at UNIMAS. Later, as the Deputy Vice Chancellor, he was initially in charge of Campus Development which involved managing the overall development and construction of the new UNIMAS campus, including IT infrastructure, systems, applications and services. Later, he was given the task of managing Research and Services, and subsequently the Student Affairs and Alumni.

After leaving UNIMAS in 2014, Dr Khairuddin became the Vice Chancellor of University Malaysia of Computer Science and Engineering (UniMy) at Putrajaya until January 2018. Later on, he was appointed as the second Vice Chancellor of University College of Technology Sarawak (UCTS) starting 1st February 2018. In November 2021, UCTS has been upgraded to a full-fledged university known as University of Technology Sarawak (UTS).

From time to time over his career, he had served as a guest and keynote speaker, member of technical expert panel, consultant, external assessor at various institutions and Government Bodies. Dr Khairuddin is recognized for his work in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for rural development, especially the e-Bario project which had won many national and international awards including the prestigious Prime Minister’s IT Award in 2003 and the Commonwealth Association of Public Administration and Management Gold Award (CAPAM) in 2006.

Dr Khairuddin began his academic career as an Assistant Lecturer at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). Later he became the founding Head of Data Communications Laboratory and Telematics Research Group of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at UTM. At UNIMAS, he started as an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Engineering and promoted to a Full Professor and Senior Professor of Electronic Engineering until his retirement in 2018.

Honorary Doctorate Degree of Doctor of the University (Honoris Causa), University of Essex, United Kingdom.
